Understanding the Egg Case
Let’s dive deeper into why this happens, so you don’t make Mark’s mistake. The cockroach egg case, or ootheca, is a marvel of nature. It is made of a protein substance that hardens into a protective shell, similar to the material of a fingernail but tougher. It is waterproof, chemical-proof, and designed to protect the payload at all costs.
When a predator (or a boot) attacks, the female’s body might be destroyed, but the ootheca is often situated at the very end of her abdomen. Mechanics favor the eggs. As the body is flattened, the ootheca is often squeezed out sideways, skidding away from the direct impact zone. It’s a biological ejection seat designed to ensure the survival of the species.
