The ringing stopped abruptly as someone picked up on the other end. Jason’s mother answered with a warm and energetic greeting.
She sounded genuinely surprised and happy to hear from me on a Saturday morning. We usually only spoke during the holidays or planned family dinners.
I made sure to keep my tone light and bubbly. I didn’t want to give away the true nature of the situation just yet.
