“Thad,” Annie began, her voice trembling, “I think your mother is trying to make me sick. Every time she visits, she adds something to the food that I know I’m allergic to. I’ve tried to avoid eating it without making a fuss, but it’s getting worse.”
Thad felt a wave of nausea wash over him. His mother, the woman who had always been a pillar of strength and love, doing something so malicious was unthinkable. “But why, Annie? Why would she do that?” Annie looked at him with sorrowful eyes. “I think she believes I’m not good enough for you. She never said it outright, but her actions speak louder than words.”
