A Brief Silence
Annie remained silent for a moment, her breathing shallow. Thad could feel the tension in the air, thick and suffocating. Finally, she spoke, her voice barely audible. “Thad, please, let’s just forget about it.”

But Thad couldn’t let it go. The distance between them was growing, and he felt an urgent need to bridge the gap, to understand what was causing the rift. He wanted to help Annie, to support her. They were partners, after all. They were to see each other through sickness and health. But she seemed determined to keep him at arm’s length.
