The Humble Setup
I didn’t just lie down on the bare hardwood; that would have been masochism, not bio-hacking. Based on the forums I had read, I needed a transition setup. I went to the closet and dug out an old, thin yoga mat that we hadn’t used in years. I dusted it off and laid it out on the floor beside the bed. It looked pathetic. High above me, the “Cloud-Rest 5000” loomed like a fortress of comfort. My little yoga mat looked like a prison cot.
I added a single wool blanket on top of the mat for a tiny bit of cushioning and temperature regulation. I also grabbed a thin throw pillow. The experts online said that big, fluffy pillows were the enemy of neck alignment, so I had to ditch my usual king-sized pillow. As I prepared my “nest” on the floor, I felt a wave of anxiety. I was a grown man with a corporate job, preparing to sleep like a dog at the foot of his own bed. Was I making a huge mistake? The floor felt incredibly hard against my hand.
