The “Sit-Rise” Test
I recently read about a study regarding the “Sit-Rise Test,” which predicts longevity. It measures your ability to sit down on the floor and get back up without using your hands or knees for support. People who can do this live longer, statistically. I realized that by sleeping on the floor, I am practicing this essential movement twice a day, every single day.
Most modern adults lose the ability to get up from the floor by their 50s. They lose the hip mobility and core strength because they live life at “chair height” (bed to chair to car to sofa). By forcing myself to navigate the floor daily, I am keeping my joints oiled and my functional strength high. I’m not just sleeping better now; I’m investing in my mobility for when I’m 80. I plan to be the grandfather who can still sit cross-legged on the carpet with his grandkids.
