The Philosophy of Comfort
This journey started to change my philosophy on life. I realized that modern society is obsessed with “comfort,” but often conflates comfort with “softness.” We think that if something is soft and easy, it’s good for us. But often, softness leads to weakness. A soft chair ruins your back. Soft food ruins your teeth. A soft bed ruins your posture.
I started seeking out “harder” things in other areas of my life. I started taking cold showers. I started walking to work instead of driving. I realized that the body thrives on a certain amount of stress and resistance. It’s called “hormesis”—beneficial stress. Sleeping on the floor was my nightly reminder that I was resilient, not fragile. I wasn’t a princess who needed a pea-free mattress; I was a human being built for the wild.
