He Spent $3,000 on a Luxury Bed — Then Slept on the Floor Instead

The Hygiene Factor

There was a downside I had to address, and I want to be honest about it: dust. When you sleep on the floor, you are face-to-face with whatever is on your floor. The first week, I sneezed a lot. I realized that dust bunnies, pet hair, and pollen settle downward. Being on a bed keeps you above that “sediment layer.” If I was going to sustain this lifestyle, I had to become a neat freak.

We started vacuuming every two days and mopping twice a week. At first, it was a chore. But soon, I realized it was a blessing in disguise. In the past, we would ignore the dust under the bed for months—a toxic breeding ground for mites. Now, our sleeping area was clinically clean because it had to be. My mild asthma actually improved because we were forced to eliminate the dust rather than just sleeping above it.
