Reclaiming the Space
We eventually made the big decision: we disassembled the bed frame. When we hauled the heavy pieces of wood and metal out of the room, the transformation was shocking. Our bedroom, which used to feel cramped and dominated by the “shrine to sleep,” suddenly looked like a dance studio. It was huge. The energy of the room changed completely. It felt airy, open, and clean.
During the day, we could fold up our rolling mats and store them in the closet. Suddenly, our bedroom was a multi-purpose room. I could do yoga in there. The kids could build Lego cities on the vast expanse of open floor. We had effectively added 100 square feet of usable living space to our house without doing any construction. The Western obsession with a permanent, massive bed frame started to look like a waste of precious real estate.
