He Spent $3,000 on a Luxury Bed — Then Slept on the Floor Instead

Adjusting the Variables

I realized that going from a “Cloud-Rest 5000” to a 3mm yoga mat was too extreme of a jump. It was like trying to run a marathon after being on the couch for a decade. I needed to modify. I went online and read more tips from the “floor sleeping” community. They suggested using a thick cotton comforter folded in half. This would provide just enough give to prevent contact bruising on the hips and shoulders, but not enough to let the spine curve out of alignment.

I set up the new “bed” that evening. It looked a bit more inviting. I also learned about pillow placement. I placed a small towel under my neck for support and put a pillow under my knees. The internet guides explained that lifting the knees slightly helps flatten the lower back against the floor, taking the pressure off the lumbar discs. I felt like a scientist running an experiment on my own body. My wife just rolled her eyes and turned off the light, but I felt more prepared this time.
