What the Drawings Really Meant
Looking back, Mrs. Higgins realized those drawings were actually expressions of love. Children don’t draw things they don’t care about.
They drew her nose because they looked at her face when she spoke. They drew her coffee cup because they associated it with her comforting presence in the morning. Even the “angry eyes” showed they were tuned into her feelings. They were paying attention. And in a world full of distractions, having thirty kids paying attention to you is the greatest compliment a teacher can receive.
