The “Monster” Phase
A few drawings in the middle of the stack seemed to deviate from humanity entirely. These students, perhaps lacking the fine motor skills to draw a person, decided to lean into creature design.
One portrait showed a green blob with six arms and sharp teeth. “Is this… me?” Mrs. Higgins asked cautiously. The student nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! You’re the homework monster! But a nice monster.” Another drew her as a robot with laser beam eyes. “Because you always see when we’re passing notes,” the student reasoned. Mrs. Higgins was learning that her students viewed her less as a human woman and more as an omnipotent, slightly terrifying entity that controlled their destiny.
